Hazelwood Park – a high-end feature home with ‘wow’ factor
There’s no denying it – this Hazelwood Park home has some serious ‘wow’ factor. With four spacious bedrooms, a large open plan living area, and stunning views over the heavenly pool, this project is breathtaking from the moment you step inside.
Our clients were particular about the architectural design and wanted to incorporate natural elements, such as stone and timber, into their new home. By combining these rustic features with modern accents, like black powder-coated aluminium windows, cladding and roofing, we were able to meet the clients’ brief – a home that embodied tranquillity and high-end design.
Colour design
Alan Sheppard’s team work closely with our clients through all stages of the process, particularly at the design phase. Selecting a colour palette that both complemented and contrasted seamlessly with the rustic surroundings took time and patience.
These colours were then used throughout the home – from the stunning timber ceilings to the Basket Range Sandstone.
Architectural features
With a striking open cantilevered timber staircase illuminated with LED lighting and Adelaide Basket Range stone used throughout the property, this home is full of quality architectural finishes.
Western Red Cedar timber eaves enhance the serenity of the exterior design. The special pitched timber ceiling gives the outdoor Alfresco entertainment area a grand effect.
The architectural louvres not only comply with Council overlooking requirements, protecting the home from the harsh Western sun, but also add to the strong and dramatic design.
Exterior features
Our clients needed a home that could withstand the harsh Australian elements while maintaining a comfortable relaxed interior. Several environmental features were added to the home’s design to ensure a high level of serenity, such as:
- • 14.88kW grid-tied PV solar system with Tesla Battery back-up
- • 10.38mm VFloat toughened glass – Grey (prevent solar gain)
- • All internal walls (and external) insulated R2.5 (acoustic and thermal properties)
- • Solid core doors throughout (assist with thermal zoning)
- • Roof blanket, reflective sarking, and ceiling insulation (R4.0) to all roof areas
- • Louvres to cut out the Western sun over large window spans
Challenges on site
Building a seamless home
The home was surrounded by exposed brick houses and located opposite the Hazelwood Park Reserve. Our clients wanted a grand home that flowed with its surroundings, without appearing obtrusive. To overcome this challenge, the team at Alan Sheppards surveyed the area and took many photos. That way, we could incorporate the colours of the Reserve into the home’s exterior to ensure that it blended seamlessly with its surroundings.
Alan Sheppard used an eyedropper tool to create a new palette for the home’s exterior. Inspired by the colours of the reserve, the house was painted in tones that both reflected and enhanced the beauty of Australian wildlife.
Maintaining Australian flora
A large tree near the cross also proved to be a challenge. How could our clients ensure the well-being of the tree, without jeopardising the design of their dream home?
After speaking with several experienced arborists we developed a plan to design a submerged water drip system that would be installed beneath the concrete. This would ensure the tree had access to water and our clients could enjoy its beauty.
